アルバムの多くの楽曲は、1968年初頭にインドのリシケシでマハリシ・マヘーシ・ヨギの瞑想旅行に参加した際に作曲されました[2][3]。この時、使用できる西洋楽器はアコースティックギターしかなかったため、多くの曲がアコースティックで書かれ、そのうちのいくつかの曲はそのままアコースティックで録音さされています[1]。
録音セッションは1968年5月30日から10月14日まで、主にロンドンのアビーロード・スタジオで行われました[3]。この時期、バンド内の緊張関係が高まっており、メンバーが個別に録音を行うことも多くありました[2][36]。
