Steely Dan（スティーリー・ダン）の『Pretzel Logic（プリッツェル・ロジック）』は、1974年に発表された3作目のアルバムです。
「Rikki Don't Lose That Number」（邦題：リキの電話番号）などの代表曲を収録し、ジャズやR&B、ロックを巧みに融合した彼ら独自のサウンドがさらに洗練された作品として知られています。

1974年2月20日にABCレコードから発表された『プレッツェル・ロジック』は、前作『Countdown to Ecstasy』の商業的な伸び悩みを受け、ベッカーとフェイゲンが「複雑さを失わず、よりコンパクトで届きやすい曲」を目指したアルバムでした。
『Countdown to Ecstasy』には長めの演奏や密度の高い構成がありましたが、本作では3空4分台のポップ・ソングという枠内で、できるだけ完結した音楽世界をつくろうとしています。
当時の『Rolling Stone』も、この作品を、短いポップ曲の形式の中で「完全な音楽的表現」を達成しようとする試みとして捉えていました。

冒頭を飾る「Rikki Don’t Lose That Number」は全米4位に達し、スティーリー・ダン最大のポップ・ヒットとなりました。
アルバム自体も全米8位まで上昇し、批評面でも高く評価されます。
英国の『NME』は1974年のアルバム・オブ・ザ・イヤーに選出しており、批評的な支持と商業的成功がそろったことで、ベッカーとフェイゲンの独特な制作方針は正しかったと証明されました。

コンセプトと歌詞世界

『プレッツェル・ロジック』は、ひとつの筋書きを追うコンセプト・アルバムではありません。
しかし全編には、都会的な距離感、皮肉、知性、少し不穏なユーモアが通っています。
登場するのは、恋愛関係にいるらしい人物、薬物の気配をまとった人物、怪しげな交渉人、学校時代の記憶、歴史上の人物、そしてジャズの伝説的サックス奏者チャーリー・パーカーです。

表題曲「プレッツェル・ロジック」は、12小節ブルースを土台にしつつ、語り手が時間を越えてナポレオンに会いに行くような奇妙な内容です。
「時間旅行」というSF的発想と、古いブルース形式の組み合わせは、スティーリー・ダンらしいねじれたユーモアをよく表しています。
アルバム題名も、まっすぐな論理ではなく、曲がりくねった理屈や都合のよい自己正当化を思わせます。

「Parker’s Band」は、ビバップの巨人チャーリー・“バード”・パーカーへの敬意を含む曲です。
一方で、その歌詞にはパーカー周辺の薬物文化を連想させる表現もあり、単純な賛歌にはしていません。
「Barrytown」は、ベッカーとフェイゲンの母校バード大学近くの集落を題材に、周囲とどこか噛み合わない学生たちの視線や階級意識を風刺した曲です。
説明を省いた歌詞だからこそ、聴き手は人物像や出来事の輪郭を想像させられます。

音楽性とサウンド

本作の魅力は、軽快で耳に残るメロディの裏側に、精密なリズム、ひねりの効いたコード進行、細かなアレンジが潜んでいるところです。
スティーリー・ダンはロック・バンドとして出発しましたが、『プレッツェル・ロジック』ではすでに、ロックだけでは捉えきれない音楽になっています。
ジャズの和声感、ブルースの語法、R&B／ファンクの粘り、洗練されたポップ・ピアノ、ホーンやストリングスが、各曲に必要な分だけ配置されています。

「Rikki Don’t Lose That Number」は、その代表例です。
マイケル・オマーティアンによるシンコペーションを含む印象的なピアノの導入から始まり、フェイゲンの少し鼻にかかった、しかしリズムを的確に捉える歌声が曲を前に押し出します。
柔らかな聴き心地でありながら、和音の移り変わりや間の取り方には独自の緊張感があります。

「Night by Night」では、ホーンを前面に出した切れ味のよいファンクが聴けます。
映画音楽的な派手さと、1970年代のブラックスプロイテーション映画を思わせる躍動感があり、後年の『The Royal Scam』や『Aja』につながる都会的なグルーヴの予兆でもあります。
対照的に「Any Major Dude Will Tell You」は穏やかで包容力のあるバラード、「Through With Buzz」はストリングスを生かした繊細な曲です。
「With a Gun」にはフォーク／カントリー的な乾いた感触もあります。

また、デューク・エリントン楽団のレパートリー「East St. Louis Toodle-Oo」を取り上げたことも重要です。
ここではジェフ・“スカンク”・バクスターが、原曲のミュート・トランペットやトロンボーンの効果をワウ・ワウ・ギターで模倣します。
単なるジャズ曲のロック化ではなく、管楽器の発音やニュアンスまでギターで再構成する、遊び心と職人的な発想が同居したカヴァーです。

制作の転換点

録音は1973年10月から1974年1月にかけて、ロサンゼルスのVillage Recorderを中心に行われ、全盛期のスティーリー・ダン作品を数多く手がけるゲイリー・カッツがプロデュースしました。
本作の大きな意味は、ベッカーとフェイゲンがバンドの固定メンバーに依存せず、曲ごとに最適な演奏家を呼ぶ制作方法を本格化させた点にあります。

従来のメンバーであるデニー・ディアス、ジェフ・バクスター、ジム・ホッダーも参加していますが、役割は以前より限定的でした。
特にドラマーのホッダーは、録音でのドラム担当からほぼ外され、バック・ヴォーカルへ回ります。
ドラムにはジム・ゴードンや、のちにTOTOを結成する若きジェフ・ポーカロが起用されました。
ベースもウォルター・ベッカーだけに任せず、ウィルトン・フェルダーやチャック・レイニーが演奏し、鍵盤にもマイケル・オマーティアン、デヴィッド・ペイチが加わっています。

この制作法は、メンバー間に緊張を生みました。
ホッダーは後年、当時はその処遇を恨んだと語っています。
しかしベッカーとフェイゲンにとっては、演奏者の立場やバンドの慣習よりも、頭の中にある音を正確に録音することが優先事項でした。
ティモシー・B・シュミットは、表題曲のコーラスで何度もテイクを重ねたと証言しています。
オマーティアンも、長時間で褒め言葉の少ない厳しい現場だった一方、成果は大きかったと振り返っています。

特筆すべき意義

『Pretzel Logic』は、固定編成のスティーリー・ダンが残した最後のアルバムです。
発売後のツアーを終えると、ベッカーとフェイゲンはライヴ活動を停止し、スタジオ制作へ専念する決断をします。
その結果、バクスター、ディアス、ホッダーは離れ、バンドは実質的にベッカーとフェイゲンを核に一流セッション奏者が集まるプロジェクトへ変化していきました。

つまり本作は、初期のバンドらしいロックの勢いと、後期の完璧主義的なスタジオ作品のあいだに立つアルバムです。
聴きやすい「Rikki Don’t Lose That Number」から入ってもよいですし、ブルースを歪ませた表題曲、ジャズへの愛情と風刺が交錯する「Parker’s Band」、緻密なアンサンブルが映える「Night by Night」へ進んでもよいでしょう。

『Pretzel Logic』には、スティーリー・ダンの核心があります。
すなわち、ポップとして即座に楽しめること、何度も聴くと和音・リズム・音色・言葉の配置が見えてくること、そして冷笑的に見えながら人間の弱さや孤独を切り捨ててはいないことです。
後の『Katy Lied』『The Royal Scam』『Aja』ほど録音技術が極端に洗練され切る前だからこそ、バンドとしての手触りも残っており、その両義性が本作をスティーリー・ダン入門としても、深く聴き込む一枚としても魅力的にしています。
